Barnaby was a boy who believed in the hidden power of the world. He lived in a small, cozy house at the edge of the woods. Barnaby was very superstitious; he never walked under ladders, and he always wore his lucky red socks on Tuesdays. He truly believed that a single mistake, like stepping on a crack in the pavement, could change his whole day for the worse.

One misty Tuesday morning, Barnaby woke up with a strange feeling in his chest. He looked out of his window and saw a black cat sitting perfectly still on the garden fence. He gasped and decided to be extra careful. He got out of bed and began to tiptoe across the wooden floorboards. He did not want to make any loud noises that might attract bad luck. His mother watched him move silently through the house with a curious smile, but Barnaby remained very serious. He refused to spill even a grain of salt during breakfast, and when he accidentally dropped a silver spoon, he quickly threw a pinch of salt over his left shoulder just to be safe.

On his way to school, Barnaby stopped at the old stone bridge that crossed the sparkling river. He paused for a moment to gaze at the swirling water below. He searched for a shimmering golden fish, which he believed brought three wishes to anyone who saw it. He did not see a fish, but he did see a single magpie on a branch. “One for sorrow,” he whispered. He waited patiently for several minutes until a second magpie flew by and joined the first. “Two for mirth,” he sighed with great relief.
When he arrived at the school gates, he felt a bit nervous about his big history quiz. He moved toward the classroom and took a small peep through the door’s glass panel. He wanted to see if the teacher looked happy or if the room felt lucky. To his surprise, he realized he had forgotten his lucky rabbit’s foot at home. His heart raced, but the bell rang, and he had to go inside. Barnaby sat at his desk and answered every question with ease. He realized he knew all the answers because he had studied very hard. He realized that his own knowledge was more powerful than any charm. He walked home that afternoon with his head held high, no longer afraid of shadows or black cats.
