Leo lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling where glow-in-the-dark stars flickered weakly. The house was quiet, the streetlights outside cast long, golden fingers across his rug, and the grandfather clock in the hallway ticked with a steady, rhythmic heartbeat. But Leo’s eyes were wide open. His mind was a carousel of thoughts—about the tall slide at the park, the blue marble he’d lost in the grass, and whether the moon ever got lonely up there in the dark. Sleep, it seemed, was a shy bird that refused to land on his shoulder.
Suddenly, a spark of light danced near his windowsill. It wasn't the cold white of a star or the steady amber of a streetlamp. It was a swirling, shimmering violet light that hummed like a tiny bumblebee. Leo sat up, rubbing his eyes. The light landed on his bedpost and unfolded into a tiny figure. She was no taller than a pencil, wearing a dress made of silver spider-silk and wings that looked like petals from a cherry blossom.
'Who are you?' Leo whispered, his voice full of wonder.
'I am Pip,' the tiny creature replied, her voice like the chime of a silver bell. 'And you, Leo, are far too awake. The Night Garden is blooming, and it misses you. Would you like to see?'
Leo didn't hesitate. He hopped out of bed, his fuzzy slippers silent on the floor. Pip flew to the window, which creaked open just enough for them to slip through. As Leo stepped onto the grass of his backyard, he gasped. This wasn't the garden he knew from the daytime. The ordinary oak tree was draped in weeping willow branches that glowed with a soft, bioluminescent green. The rosebushes hadn't closed for the night; instead, they had opened wide, revealing centers that pulsed with a gentle, rhythmic light like tiny hearts.
'Follow the path of the Moon-bells,' Pip commanded, darting ahead.

Leo followed her toward the back fence, where the shadows usually hid the old shed. But now, a path of translucent, bell-shaped flowers had grown overnight. Every time Leo’s slipper brushed against them, they let out a soft, musical 'tinkle' that made his toes feel warm. Above him, the air was filled with Stardust Butterflies—creatures with wings made of pure light that left trails of glittering dust behind them as they spiraled through the cool night air.
'Where are we going?' Leo asked, watching a butterfly land briefly on his nose, leaving a tingle of magic behind.
'To the center of the garden,' Pip said, her wings fluttering excitedly. 'To the Dreamflower. It only blooms for those who need a little help finding their way to the Land of Nod.'
They walked past the Luma-lilies, which stood tall and proud, casting a soft blue light over the garden pond. The water wasn't dark and murky; it looked like liquid silver, and tiny glowing fish leaped from the surface, catching moonbeams in their scales. The air smelled of vanilla, lavender, and old books—the most comforting scents Leo could imagine.
As they reached the very middle of the garden, the ground began to slope upward into a gentle hill covered in moss as soft as a velvet blanket. At the top of the hill stood a single, magnificent flower. It had petals as white as a cloud and a heart that glowed with a warm, golden radiance. It was the Dreamflower. Its petals swayed even though there was no wind, and a low, soothing hum vibrated from its stem.
'Go on,' Pip whispered, hovering near Leo’s ear. 'Take a deep breath.'

Leo climbed the mossy hill and knelt before the great flower. As he leaned in, the Dreamflower leaned toward him, its golden heart glowing brighter. He took a long, deep breath. The scent was like warm milk and honey, like a soft hug from his mother, and like the feeling of being tucked in tight on a rainy afternoon.
Suddenly, Leo’s limbs felt heavy—but in a good way. His eyelids, which had been so stubborn before, now felt like lead weights. The carousel in his mind slowed down until it stopped on a single, beautiful image of a quiet forest. The tinkling of the Moon-bells and the humming of the Dreamflower blurred together into a lullaby.
'It’s time to go back,' Pip said softly. She took Leo’s hand—her tiny fingers felt like a warm spark—and led him back down the path. The Stardust Butterflies hovered around them, forming a glowing canopy that kept the world quiet and safe. The silver pond faded into the distance, and the Luma-lilies bowed their heads as they passed.
By the time they reached the window of his bedroom, Leo was yawning so wide he thought he might swallow a star. He climbed back through the window and tumbled into his soft, cool sheets. The blankets felt fluffier than they had before, and his pillow felt like a cloud.
Pip landed on the edge of his duvet. 'Goodnight, Leo,' she whispered. She touched her tiny hand to his forehead, leaving a final speck of shimmering dust. 'The garden will be here whenever the night feels too long.'
Leo tried to say thank you, but the words turned into a soft sigh. As Pip flew out into the moonlight, Leo’s eyes drifted shut. The last thing he saw was the faint violet glow of his friend disappearing into the dark. He wasn't thinking about marbles or slides or the lonely moon anymore. He was already wandering through the soft, golden fields of his dreams, where the Dreamflower bloomed forever under a sky of velvet blue.
