Once upon a time, in a sunny meadow near the edge of a forest, there lived a very fast hare named Holly and a very slow tortoise named Tilly. Holly was known for her quick leaps and her love of showing off. Tilly, on the other hand, moved slowly and carefully, always choosing her steps with care. One bright morning, Holly came bounding up to Tilly and said, 'Tilly, I bet I can race you from that big oak tree to the stream in the clearing. I bet I’ll win easily!' Tilly blinked slowly and said, 'I would be honored to race you, Holly. But I may not be as fast as you.'
Holly laughed and said, 'Of course you won’t! But let’s race anyway.' So they set the path between the oak tree and the stream, and the race began. Holly zoomed ahead, her ears flapping in the breeze, while Tilly plodded along, her shell glinting in the sunlight. Holly reached the stream first, but she stopped to rest, confident she had already won. She lay down in the tall grass, her eyes closed, and thought about how easy it was to beat someone so slow.
Meanwhile, Tilly kept moving, one slow step after another, her shell swishing gently in the breeze. She didn’t stop, didn’t rest, and didn’t look back. Holly, still resting, didn’t notice Tilly was still in the race. Finally, Tilly reached the stream, her breath steady and her heart calm. She looked across at Holly, who was still fast asleep in the grass. Tilly gently nudged Holly with her nose. Holly blinked and sat up, surprised to see Tilly standing by the stream.
'Wait! You won?' Holly said, her voice full of disbelief. Tilly nodded. 'Yes, I did. I didn’t stop, I didn’t get distracted, and I kept going.' Holly looked down at the ground, a little ashamed. 'I thought I was so much faster, but I let my pride stop me.' Tilly smiled warmly and said, 'Sometimes, the slowest of us can be the fastest if we never give up.'
Holly thought about that for a moment and said, 'You’re right, Tilly. I was too confident and too quick to stop and think. I should have been more like you.' Tilly replied, 'It’s not about being fast or slow. It’s about being steady and kind to yourself.' From that day on, Holly and Tilly became the best of friends, and Holly learned to race not for pride, but for fun and friendship.
The meadow became a place where all the animals learned from Holly and Tilly’s race. They learned that rushing doesn’t always win, and that taking your time with care and heart can lead to the greatest victories of all. And so, the hare and the tortoise lived together, always reminding one another of the power of patience and the beauty of steady steps.
The moral of the story is: Patience and persistence will always outpace pride and haste.
