Deep in the heart of a small, emerald-green valley lived a seven-year-old girl named Mia. Mia was a quiet child who noticed things others often missed. She noticed the way dew clung to spiderwebs like tiny diamonds, and how the moss felt like a plush green carpet beneath her bare feet. But most of all, Mia loved the giant, gnarled oak tree that stood at the edge of her garden. She called him Grandfather Oak.
One breezy Tuesday afternoon, Mia sat at the base of Grandfather Oak, her back pressed against his rough, silver-gray bark. She closed her eyes, listening to the rustle of the leaves above. Usually, it was just a shushing sound, like a mother calming a baby. But today, the wind was different. It carried a rhythmic hum, a series of soft, musical pops and sighs.
Mia pressed her ear closer to the trunk. 'Is someone there?' she whispered.
'We are always here, Little Seed,' a deep, resonant voice vibrated through the wood. It sounded like the low notes of a cello mixed with the crunch of dry leaves.
Mia jumped, her eyes wide. 'Grandfather Oak? Was that you?'
'It was indeed,' the tree replied, his leaves shimmering despite the lack of wind. 'Most humans move too fast to hear us. You, however, have the gift of stillness.'
'Can all trees talk?' Mia asked, her heart dancing with excitement.
'In our own way,' Grandfather Oak hummed. 'Listen.'

Mia leaned in. Suddenly, the backyard wasn't just a garden; it was a symphony. The weeping willow by the pond let out a long, melodic sigh. The tall pines at the fence line chattered in sharp, clicking needles.
'What are you saying?' Mia asked, leaning her head back to look at the vast canopy above.
'We are sharing the news of the sky,' Grandfather Oak explained. 'And we are working. Do you know what we do while you play, Mia?'
Mia shook her head. 'I thought you just grew.'
'Oh, we do much more,' the tree said. 'Take a deep breath, Little Seed. What do you feel?'
Mia took a big breath of the afternoon air. 'It feels... cool. And clean. It smells like green things.'
'That is our gift,' the Oak whispered. 'Think of us as the world’s giant lungs. All day long, we catch the gray, heavy air that comes from cars and chimneys—the air that makes the world feel tired. We pull it into our leaves, and with the help of the golden sun, we turn it into sparkling, fresh air for you to breathe. We keep the world’s breath sweet and light.'
Mia touched a low-hanging leaf with wonder. 'You clean the air for us?'

'Every single day,' the Willow by the pond added, her voice like trickling water. 'But that is not all. Look closer at my sisters and brothers. See the hollows in our bellies and the cradles in our arms?'
Mia looked up and saw a squirrel scampering along a high branch, clutching an acorn. In a fork of the branches, she spotted the messy bundle of sticks that was a crow’s nest.
'We are the Great Hotels of the forest,' Grandfather Oak chuckled, a sound that made his branches shake. 'In my roots, the beetles and worms find cool tunnels. In my bark, the tiny ants build their highways. In my branches, the owls find a place to sleep during the day, and the songbirds sing their morning news. Without us, they would have no homes, no shade, and no safety.'
'I never knew you were so busy,' Mia said softly. She felt a surge of gratitude for the silent giants standing guard around her home.
'We are a family,' the tree continued. 'Deep underground, our roots are holding hands. We share our food and our water. If a young sapling is hungry, we send it sugar through the soil. If a storm is coming, we whisper warnings through the wind so the birds can hide.'
As the sun began to dip behind the hills, painting the sky in shades of violet and orange, Mia stood up and gave Grandfather Oak a big hug. His bark was warm from the day’s sun.
'Thank you for the air,' she whispered. 'And thank you for taking care of the squirrels.'
'You are welcome, Little Seed,' Grandfather Oak replied. 'Just remember to keep your heart quiet and your ears open. The world has many stories to tell, if you only take the time to listen.'
From 그날 on, Mia was never lonely in the garden. She brought water to the trees during the hot summers and checked on the nests after big storms. She became the guardian of the whispering woods, the girl who knew that every leaf was a lung and every branch was a home. And every time she took a deep, clean breath, she smiled, knowing exactly who to thank.
