Once upon a time, nestled on the edge of a vast, emerald-green forest known as the Whispering Woods, lived a young girl named Goldilocks. She was a bright and cheerful child, named for her hair which cascaded down her back like ribbons of spun silk and morning sunlight. However, Goldilocks possessed a trait that often led her into a bit of muddle: she was exceedingly curious. Her mother often told her, 'Curiosity is a wonderful thing, my dear, but it must always be paired with respect for others.'
One breezy Tuesday morning, while the dew was still sparkling on the clover, Goldilocks set off for a walk. She followed a path lined with wild strawberries and bluebells, wandering further than she usually allowed herself. Deep in a sun-dappled clearing, she discovered a house unlike any she had ever seen. It was a cozy cottage made of sturdy logs, with a roof of golden thatch and flowerboxes overflowing with red geraniums.
Goldilocks knocked on the heavy oak door. No one answered. She knocked again, louder this time. Still, the house remained silent. Most children would have turned back, but Goldilocks’s curiosity whispered to her. She reached out, turned the brass handle, and found that the door was unlocked. With a gentle creak, it swung open, revealing a kitchen that smelled delightfully of cinnamon, oats, and honey.
On the large wooden table sat three bowls of steaming porridge. The family of bears who lived there—Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear—had gone for a morning stroll to let their breakfast cool. Goldilocks’s stomach gave a loud, hungry rumble. She looked around, and seeing no one, she decided to have just a tiny taste.
First, she tasted the porridge from the great, big bowl belonging to Papa Bear. 'Ouch! This is much too hot!' she cried, fanning her mouth. Next, she tasted the porridge from the middle-sized bowl belonging to Mama Bear. 'Oh, this is much too cold,' she sighed, making a face. Finally, she tasted the porridge from the tiny, little bowl belonging to Baby Bear. 'Mmm, this is just right!' she whispered happily. She found it so delicious that she didn't stop until every last drop was gone.

Feeling a little full and sleepy, Goldilocks wandered into the living room. There stood three chairs. She climbed onto the great, big chair of Papa Bear. 'This is much too hard,' she grumbled, feeling like she was sitting on a rock. She moved to the middle-sized chair of Mama Bear. 'This is much too soft,' she said, as she sank so deep into the velvet cushions she could hardly see over the arms. Then, she tried the tiny, little chair of Baby Bear. 'This is just right!' she chirped. But just as she began to rock back and forth, the wood gave a loud *CRACK*! The chair broke into a dozen pieces, and Goldilocks landed on the floor with a thud.
Rubbing her elbow, Goldilocks felt a bit guilty, but her curiosity pushed her upstairs to the bedroom. There, she found three beds. She lay down on Papa Bear’s great, big bed, but it was far too firm for her liking. She tried Mama Bear’s middle-sized bed, but it was so squishy she felt like she was floating on a cloud. Finally, she curled up in Baby Bear’s tiny, little bed. 'This is just right,' she murmured. The blankets were cozy, the pillow was soft, and within moments, she was fast asleep.
While Goldilocks slept, the three bears returned from their walk. They were hungry and looking forward to their breakfast. Papa Bear looked at his bowl and growled in his deep, rumbling voice, 'Someone has been eating my porridge!'
Mama Bear looked at her bowl and said in her medium, gentle voice, 'Someone has been eating my porridge!'
Baby Bear looked at his empty bowl and squeaked in his high, tiny voice, 'Someone has been eating my porridge, and they’ve eaten it all up!'

The bears walked into the living room, feeling very confused. 'Someone has been sitting in my chair!' growled Papa Bear. 'Someone has been sitting in my chair!' said Mama Bear. 'Someone has been sitting in my chair,' cried Baby Bear, 'and they’ve broken it all to pieces!'
The three bears climbed the stairs, their hearts heavy. They entered the bedroom. 'Someone has been sleeping in my bed!' growled Papa Bear. 'Someone has been sleeping in my bed!' said Mama Bear. 'Someone has been sleeping in my bed,' squeaked Baby Bear, 'and here she is!'
At the sound of the little bear's voice, Goldilocks bolted awake. She saw three pairs of eyes watching her—not with anger, but with great sadness and surprise. She looked at the broken chair she had left downstairs and the empty bowl she had drained. She realized that these things didn't belong to her; they belonged to a family who had worked hard for them.
'I am so sorry!' Goldilocks cried, her face turning as red as the geraniums outside. She jumped out of bed, ran down the stairs, and raced out the front door. She didn't stop running until she reached her own garden.
Goldilocks never forgot the lesson she learned that day. She realized that being curious was no excuse for being thoughtless. From then on, she always knocked and waited for an invitation, and she never used anything that wasn't hers without asking first. And as for the bears? They eventually fixed the chair, but they always made sure to lock their door before going for a walk.
