In the heart of the Kingdom of Oakhaven, Princess Elara was known more for her muddy boots than her golden crown. While other royals practiced their bows and curtsies, Elara practiced her lunges with a wooden sword and a shield forged from an old silver platter. She was the bravest soul in the land, a trait put to the ultimate test when a dragon named Barnaby swooped down from the Obsidian Peaks and snatched the kingdom’s Golden Bell from the high tower. Without the bell, the morning didn't feel like morning, and the evening lacked its comforting song.
Elara didn't wait for the knights to sharpen their lances. She packed a small bag of apples, strapped on her silver shield, and began the long trek up the jagged mountainside. The air grew thin and cold, and the wind howled through the pines, but her heart burned with determination. Finally, she reached a cavern that smelled of smoke and old pennies.

"Barnaby!" she called out, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Return what you have taken!"
A massive shadow loomed over her. Barnaby emerged, his scales shimmering like oil on water—deep purples, burning oranges, and emerald greens. He let out a roar that shook the very stalactites from the ceiling. Elara didn't run. Instead, she raised her shield as Barnaby swiped a massive claw toward her. The battle began—a whirlwind of scales and silver. Elara rolled under his belly, jumped over his sweeping tail, and used her shield to deflect puff after puff of harmless, soot-filled smoke. It was a fierce dance of spirit and speed.

But as she prepared for another charge, she noticed something unusual. Barnaby wasn't looking at her with malice; his eyes were watering, and he was limping heavily. In his right paw, tucked behind the Golden Bell, was a jagged piece of iron-wood stuck deep between his scales.
Elara lowered her shield. "Wait," she whispered. The dragon paused, his chest heaving. Slowly, she stepped forward, reaching out a hand. "You're not a thief, Barnaby. You're hurt."
With gentle hands, she gripped the splinter and pulled it free. Barnaby let out a small yelp, followed by a sigh of immense relief. He nudged the Golden Bell toward her with his snout and lowered his head for a scratch behind the ears. The battle was over, won not with a sword, but with a helping hand. From that day on, the bell rang louder than ever, accompanied by the beating wings of Oakhaven’s new dragon guardian.
