Once upon a time, in a town where the houses were so tall and crowded that neighbors could reach out their windows to shake hands, lived two children named Kay and Gerda. They were not brother and sister, but they loved each other as if they were. Their favorite place was a small rooftop garden where their parents grew roses in wooden boxes. In the summer, they sat among the blooms, and in the winter, they watched the snowflakes dance against the glass.
One evening, while the snow fell thick and fast, Kay’s grandmother told them stories of the Snow Queen, who flew through the streets on the coldest nights, her breath frosting the windows into patterns of white flowers. Kay laughed, saying he would put the Snow Queen on the stove to melt her. But that night, a tiny shard of an enchanted, wicked mirror—a mirror that made everything beautiful look ugly and everything good look bad—flew through the air and landed right in Kay’s eye. Another sliver pierced his heart, turning it into a heavy lump of ice.
From that moment, Kay changed. He was mean to Gerda, he pulled the roses from their boxes, and he mocked his grandmother. When winter came again, Kay tied his small sled to a magnificent white carriage that swept through the town square. The driver, wrapped in white furs, was the Snow Queen herself. She whisked Kay away, far to the north, leaving nothing but a trail of frost behind.

When spring arrived and Kay did not return, the townspeople said he was gone forever. But Gerda refused to believe it. “Kay is alive,” she whispered to the roses. “And I will find him.”
Gerda set off on her journey, wearing her favorite red shoes. She first came to a river and offered her shoes to the water if it would tell her where Kay was. The river carried her in a small boat to the garden of an old woman who knew magic. The garden was filled with flowers that never wilted, and for a while, the sweet scent made Gerda forget her quest. But one day, seeing a rose on the woman’s hat reminded her of Kay. She wept, and her tears watered the ground, causing a real rosebush to spring up. “Kay is not dead,” the roses told her. “We have been under the earth, and he is not there.”
Gerda thanked the flowers and ran until her feet were sore. She met a clever crow who told her of a prince who had married a princess. Gerda hoped it was Kay, but when she reached the palace, she found a kind boy who was not her friend. The Prince and Princess, moved by her story, gave her a golden carriage and warm fur clothes to help her on her way.

As the carriage traveled through a dark forest, it was attacked by robbers. A little robber girl, with wild hair and a sharp knife, took Gerda captive. But when she heard Gerda’s brave story, her heart softened. “I will help you,” the robber girl said. She released her captive reindeer, named Bae, who knew the way to the North. “Take this girl to the Snow Queen’s palace in Lapland,” the girl commanded.
Bae the reindeer ran faster than the wind, across the shimmering northern lights and over the frozen tundras. They stopped briefly with a wise woman who lived in a small hut. She told Gerda, “I cannot give you more power than you already have. Your power lies in your sweet, innocent heart. Your love for Kay is the strongest magic there is.”
Finally, they reached the Snow Queen’s palace. The walls were made of drifting snow and the windows of cold wind. Inside, the air was so sharp it stung, and everything was silent and white. Gerda found Kay sitting in the middle of a vast, frozen lake. He was blue with cold, almost black, but he did not feel it. He was trying to arrange pieces of ice into the word 'Eternity,' for the Snow Queen had promised him the whole world and a pair of new skates if he could solve the puzzle.
Gerda ran to him and threw her arms around his neck. “Kay! Dear Kay! I have found you!” but Kay sat still and cold. Gerda began to cry, and her warm tears fell upon his chest. They soaked through to his heart and melted the lump of ice. Kay looked up, the shard fell from his eye as he wept, and he recognized her. “Gerda!” he cried. “Where have you been? And where have I been?”
They danced for joy, and even the pieces of ice joined in, forming the word 'Eternity' on their own. The Snow Queen had no power over them now. Hand in hand, they left the palace of ice. The sun began to shine, the birds began to sing, and the flowers bloomed as they walked home. When they reached their city, they realized they had grown up, but in their hearts, they remained children, sitting among the roses in the summer sun, knowing that love and determination could melt the coldest winter.
