The humid Caribbean air hung thick and sweet with the scent of ripe mangoes. Abuela Ma, her face etched with the wisdom of countless summers, sat on the porch swing, her fingers deftly peeling a juicy mango. Zurelys, Yusseth, and Dariel, her three rambunctious grandchildren, buzzed around her like hummingbirds, their eyes fixed on the golden fruit. Abuelo Ima, perched on his favorite rocking chair, watched them with a twinkle in his eye, his hands resting on his cane.
"Abuela, tell us the story again!" Zurelys begged, her pigtails bouncing. Yusseth and Dariel echoed her plea. Abuela Ma chuckled, a warm, comforting sound. "Which story, mis amores? I have so many."
"The one about the mango tree that grants wishes!" Yusseth exclaimed, his eyes wide with anticipation. Abuela Ma winked at Abuelo Ima, who nodded encouragingly. She began, her voice weaving a magical spell. "Long, long ago, before even your Abuelo Ima was born, there was a mango tree, not unlike the one in our garden. But this tree... this tree held a secret. It was said that if you whispered your deepest wish to its roots under the light of the full moon, and gave it the sweetest mango, your wish would come true."
The children were captivated. Dariel, the youngest, tugged at Abuela Mas skirt. "Did anyone ever make a wish, Abuela?"
Abuela Ma smiled knowingly. "Many tried. Some wished for riches, some for power. But the tree, it was wise. It only granted wishes that came from the heart, wishes that would bring happiness not only to the wisher but to those around them."
The next day, the full moon hung heavy in the sky. Zurelys, Yusseth, and Dariel crept out of bed, clutching a perfectly ripe mango. They tiptoed to the mango tree in the garden, the moonlight painting silver patterns on the leaves. After much deliberation, they huddled together and whispered their wish: "We wish for Abuela Ma and Abuelo Ima to always be healthy and happy, so they can always tell us stories!"
They carefully placed the mango at the base of the tree. The next morning, Abuela Ma and Abuelo Ima were more energetic than they had been in months. Abuela Ma made the most delicious mango flan they had ever tasted, and Abuelo Ima told them a brand new story about a mischievous monkey and a talking parrot. The children knew, deep in their hearts, that the mango tree had heard their wish, and that their Abuela Ma and Abuelo Imas happiness was the greatest magic of all.
