The grit crunched under Elaras worn sandals. Día Cero. Day Zero. The words echoed through the skeletal remains of what was once a bustling marketplace, now a graveyard of cracked pavement and dust devils. Water. It was all anyone talked about, dreamed about, killed for.
Elara remembered her grandmothers stories, tales of overflowing rivers and shimmering lakes. Tales of children splashing in fountains, of gardens bursting with life, all sustained by the lifeblood that now eluded them. Her grandmother had railed against the waste, the mindless extravagance of generations past. They flushed their toilets with potable water! she would lament, her voice cracking with disbelief. Elara, a child then, couldnt fathom such a reality. Now, she understood the magnitude of that crime.
Today, Elaras mission was simple: reach the communal well before dawn and secure a meager ration for her family. The well was guarded by the Resguardos, armed and ruthless, rationing water based on a complex, often corrupt, system. Elara clutched the empty jerrycan tighter. Her younger brother, Mateo, was weakening. He needed water, not stories.
The line at the well snaked for kilometers, a testament to the desperation that gripped the city. Elara saw faces etched with worry, hunger, and a simmering rage. She saw scavengers picking through the discarded containers, hoping for a stray drop. She saw the Resguardos, their faces grim, their eyes scanning for any sign of unrest.
As the sun began to paint the sky in hues of orange and blood red, Elara reached the front of the line. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She presented her familys ration card, her hands trembling. The Resguardo eyed her with suspicion. Your quota is reduced, he barked, his voice devoid of emotion. Your sector exceeded its allowance last week. Excessive washing of clothes.
Elaras blood ran cold. Excessive washing? They hadnt washed clothes in weeks. She knew what had happened. Someone in her sector had hoarded water, watering a forbidden garden, indulging in a luxury they couldnt afford. A surge of anger, hot and bitter, rose within her. But anger wouldnt quench Mateos thirst.
With a heavy heart, Elara accepted the reduced ration. It wouldnt be enough. As she walked away, she saw a young boy, no older than Mateo, deliberately spilling water from his container, letting it seep into the parched earth. A flash of understanding ignited within Elara. The boy wasnt malicious; he was simply too young to comprehend the value of each precious drop. He had never known a world where water was scarce.
Elara knew then that the fight for water wasnt just about survival; it was about education, about instilling a respect for this precious resource in the next generation. It was about ensuring that the echoes of Azul, the mythical blue rivers of her grandmothers stories, didnt fade completely. It was about preventing another Día Cero. She would start with Mateo. She would teach him the stories, the lessons learned in the dust, and hope that one day, Azul would return.
