Elisa, approaching sixty with the grace of a seasoned public servant, had seen it all in the Department of Records. Mountains of paperwork, bureaucratic labyrinths, and enough coffee to fuel a small city. But nothing, absolutely nothing, had prepared her for the treachery of the newly waxed linoleum floor. It was a Tuesday, just after ten, the usual mid-morning rush of requests subsiding. Elisa, feeling the familiar tug, excused herself to visit the restrooms. The corridor, usually a dull beige, gleamed under the fluorescent lights. Too gleamed, she thought vaguely, before her left foot slid out from under her. Time seemed to slow as she flailed, a stack of files escaping her grasp and scattering across the polished surface. Then, the jarring impact. A sharp, radiating pain shot through her left ankle. She lay there, winded, surrounded by the detritus of her fall, the fluorescent lights mocking her with their unwavering brightness.
Days blurred into weeks. The diagnosis was clear: a severely sprained ankle, bordering on a fracture. Cast, crutches, doctors appointments – her life became a monotonous cycle of pain and immobility. The department, initially sympathetic, slowly forgot her. Cards stopped arriving. Phone calls dwindled. She felt like a forgotten file, gathering dust in a forgotten corner of the archive she had dedicated her life to. The initial frustration morphed into a quiet despair. Would she ever walk properly again? Would she ever return to the familiar rhythm of her work? The image of the gleaming linoleum, the source of her misfortune, haunted her dreams.
Months later, hobbling slightly but with a determined glint in her eye, Elisa returned. The office was different. New faces, new procedures, a new sense of urgency that she found both exciting and disconcerting. Her old desk was gone, replaced by a sleek, ergonomic workstation. Her nameplate was nowhere to be seen. A young intern, barely out of college, informed her, with a dismissive wave, that her files had been reassigned. For a moment, the despair threatened to engulf her again. But then, something shifted. A spark of defiance ignited within her. She had survived the linoleum. She had survived the isolation. She would survive this too. She approached the intern, a small, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. "Tell your supervisor," she said, her voice firm, "that Elisa Rodriguez is back. And I need to speak with them immediately about workplace safety standards."
The floor, she noticed, wasnt quite as shiny anymore.
