Tom and the Friday Fortune

Tom woke up feeling a little bit wobbly. His tummy felt like it was doing tiny somersaults, and his head felt as heavy as a giant pumpkin. "Maybe some fresh air and a bit of fun will help me feel better," he whispered to his sleepy cat, Mittens. He decided to visit the Brightberry Fair, a place filled with colorful ribbons and the wonderful smell of toasted corn.

While wandering past the spinning carousel, Tom saw a small purple tent decorated with silver stars. Inside sat a lady named Madame Zola. She wore a crown of silk flowers and peered into a glowing crystal ball that shimmered like moonlight. "Young Tom," she said in a voice like tinkling bells, "the stars have a special message for you. Do not travel this Friday. Stay close to home, for the roads will be very tricky!"

Tom gulped, his eyes wide. He thanked her and hurried home as fast as his wobbly legs could carry him. But when he reached his front door, he found a bright blue envelope waiting for him. It was the letter he had been dreaming of all summer! He had been invited to be a Junior Helper at the Great Oak Zoo. It was his dream job! However, the invitation was for this Friday, and the zoo was located all the way across the big, wide valley.

Tom sat on his porch, feeling very confused. If he went, would the "tricky roads" cause him trouble? If he stayed, he would miss his big chance to help the animals. He thought and thought until his head stopped feeling heavy. He looked at his sturdy pair of brown walking boots. "Madame Zola said the roads would be tricky," Tom realized with a smile, "but she didn't say I couldn't walk through the secret meadow path!"

On Friday morning, Tom put on his boots and skipped through the tall green grass and bright wildflowers. He avoided the dusty, bumpy roads entirely. He watched orange butterflies dance and listened to the chirping of happy birds. When he finally reached the zoo, the head ranger beamed at him. "You're the only helper who made it on time! The main road is blocked by a giant mud puddle!" Tom smiled, realizing that a bit of caution and a lot of creative thinking had saved the day. He wasn't feeling wobbly anymore; he felt like a hero.
