Dia cero. Day zero. The words echoed in the parched streets of Arequipa like a death knell. The tap was dry. Had been for weeks, officially. Before that, the trickle, the rationing, the whispered anxieties had been a slow, agonizing prelude to this, the final act.
Elara, her face etched with lines that belied her twenty years, tightened her grip on the recycled plastic container. Todays water run was to the communal well, a journey that grew longer and more treacherous each day as people grew desperate. The once-orderly queue had dissolved into a chaotic scrum, fueled by fear and the primal need to survive.
Her abuela, her grandmother, waited at home. A frail woman, her memories were as precious as the dwindling water supply. Elara remembered abuelas stories of the Chili River, once a vibrant artery of life, now a cracked, dust-filled ravine. Abuela spoke of abundance, of gardens overflowing with produce, of children splashing in the cool water. These stories, now, felt like cruel taunts.
Today, the well was nearly empty. The guard, a weary man named Mateo, announced the bad news. “Only enough for the children and the elderly,” he croaked, his voice hoarse. A collective groan rippled through the crowd. Elara felt a surge of anger, but it quickly subsided, replaced by a dull ache of resignation.
She pushed forward, her determination fueled by the image of abuelas parched lips. She pleaded with Mateo, showing him the empty container, explaining her grandmothers age and frailty. Mateo hesitated, his eyes filled with pity. He filled half the container, barely enough to moisten abuelas mouth.
On the way home, Elara saw a group of children playing in the dust, kicking up small clouds of earth. They were oblivious to the gravity of the situation, their laughter a jarring contrast to the silent suffering around them. She remembered abuelas words: “Water is life, Elara. Respect it. Conserve it.”
That night, Elara sat beside abuela, spoon-feeding her the precious water. Abuela smiled weakly, her eyes filled with gratitude. “Tell me again about the river, abuela,” Elara whispered, seeking solace in the past. As abuela recounted the tales of a bygone era, Elara vowed to do everything in her power to preserve every drop, to teach the children the value of water, to ensure that the echoes of abundance wouldnt fade completely into the dust.
