Once upon a time, in a kingdom where the flowers smelled like honey and the sun always seemed to shine just a little brighter, lived a young princess named Isabella. Isabella had many toys—dolls made of silk, wooden horses with manes of real hair, and books filled with moving pictures. But her favorite possession of all was a small, heavy ball made of pure, solid gold. It glittered like a fallen star in her palm, and she took it everywhere she went.
One warm afternoon, Isabella wandered into the Great Forest that bordered the castle grounds. In the center of the forest sat an ancient stone well, its water so deep and still it looked like a mirror for the trees. Isabella sat on the edge of the well, tossing her golden ball high into the air and catching it with a satisfying 'thwack.'
But on her tenth toss, the ball slipped through her fingers. It bounced once on the mossy stones, twice on the rim, and then—splash!—it disappeared into the dark, cold depths of the well. Isabella peered over the edge, but the water was too deep to see the bottom. Her heart sank. She began to cry, her tears falling into the water where her treasure had gone.
'Why do you weep, Princess?' a croaky, gurgling voice asked.
Isabella looked around and saw a large, green frog sitting on a lily pad at the edge of the well. He had big, golden eyes that seemed quite kind, though Isabella thought he was rather slimy and strange.
'Oh, it’s you, you old water-paddler,' she sighed. 'I am crying because my golden ball has fallen into the well, and I shall never see it again.'
'I can get it for you,' the frog said, 'but what will you give me in return? I do not want your pearls, or your jewels, or even your golden crown.'

'I will give you whatever you want!' Isabella promised, thinking only of her ball.
'If you will love me and let me be your companion,' the frog said. 'If you let me sit at your table, eat from your golden plate, drink from your cup, and sleep upon your velvet pillow, then I will dive down and bring your ball back to you.'
'I promise everything!' Isabella cried. But in her heart, she thought, 'What nonsense! This frog belongs in the water with his own kind. He could never follow me back to the palace.'
With a graceful leap, the frog dove into the water. A moment later, he rose to the surface, the golden ball held firmly in his mouth. He dropped it onto the grass, and Isabella let out a squeal of joy. She snatched up the ball and ran toward the castle as fast as her legs could carry her.
'Wait!' the frog called out. 'Take me with you! I cannot run as fast as you!' But Isabella didn't look back.
The next evening, as Isabella sat at dinner with the King and his court, a strange sound came from the great hall doors. *Clack-slop, clack-slop.* Then, a small knock sounded at the door.
'Princess, Princess, open the door!' a voice called. 'Remember the promise you made by the well!'

Isabella turned pale. She told her father, the King, everything that had happened. The King looked at her gravely. 'Isabella,' he said, 'a promise is a sacred thing. If you gave your word, you must keep it. Let the frog in.'
With trembling hands, Isabella opened the door. The frog hopped in and followed her all the way to the table. 'Lift me up,' he asked. Isabella hesitated until the King gave her a firm look. She lifted the frog onto the table. He ate from her golden plate and sipped from her cup, while Isabella found she could hardly swallow a single bite.
When he was full, the frog yawned. 'I am tired. Now, take me to your room so I may sleep on your velvet pillow.'
Isabella began to cry again. She didn’t want a cold, damp frog in her beautiful, clean bed. But the King said, 'He helped you when you were in distress, and you gave him your word. You must not despise him now.'
Isabella carried the frog upstairs in two fingers. When she reached her room, she set him in a corner, hoping he would stay there. But the frog hopped toward her bed. 'I want to sleep on the pillow,' he whispered.
Isabella felt a flicker of shame for her unkindness. She picked him up gently and placed him on the soft, purple velvet of her pillow. As she looked at him, she realized he wasn't just a slimy frog; he was a creature who had been patient and hopeful. She leaned down and kissed his tiny, green head.
Suddenly, the room was filled with a bright, golden light. When Isabella opened her eyes, the frog was gone. In his place stood a handsome prince with eyes as kind as the frog’s had been. He explained that a wicked witch had turned him into a frog, and only the kindness of a princess who kept her word could break the spell.
Isabella and the Prince became the best of friends, and eventually, they ruled the kingdom together. Isabella never forgot the lesson she learned at the well: that a promise is a bond of the heart, and that true beauty is often hidden where you least expect to find it.
