The Three Little Pigs

Once upon a time, in a valley where the grass was the color of emeralds and the flowers smelled like honey, lived three little pig brothers: Percy, Pip, and Peter. They were growing fast, and the time had come for them to leave their mother’s cozy cottage and build homes of their own.

Percy, the youngest, was a pig who loved to nap. He found work quite bothersome and preferred to spend his afternoons chasing butterflies or snoozing under the willow trees. 'I want a house that is finished in a jiffy,' Percy declared. He went to a nearby field and gathered great bundles of golden straw. Within just one hour, he had piled the straw into a lopsided hut. It wasn't very sturdy, and it smelled a bit like a dusty barn, but Percy didn't mind. He curled up inside and fell fast asleep, dreaming of clover.

Pip, the middle brother, was a bit more energetic than Percy, but he was also very impatient. He wanted to go play in the mud puddles with Percy as soon as possible. 'Sticks are the way to go,' Pip decided. He gathered fallen branches and twigs from the edge of the dark forest. He hammered them together with a few rusty nails, creating a shack that leaned slightly to the left. 'Good enough!' Pip chirped, tossing his hammer aside. He ran off to join Percy, leaving his flimsy wooden house behind.

Peter, the eldest, was different. He was a thoughtful pig who believed that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing well. He remembered his mother’s advice: 'Hard work brings safety, and patience brings peace.' Peter decided to build his house out of heavy, red bricks. While his brothers played and laughed, Peter was busy mixing mortar and hauling heavy stones. His back ached, and his trotters were covered in grey dust.

'Why are you working so hard, Peter?' Percy called out, munching on an apple.

'Come play with us!' Pip shouted.

Peter wiped his brow and smiled. 'I am building a house that will stand against the wind and the rain. You should make yours stronger, too.' But the two younger pigs just laughed and skipped away.

Days passed, and Peter finally finished. His house was magnificent, with a sturdy oak door, a wide chimney, and walls so thick that not even a whisper could pass through. He sat by his fireplace, feeling proud of his hard work.

However, lurking in the shadows of the forest was the Big Bad Wolf. This wolf wasn't just hungry; he was a performer. He loved drama and considered himself the greatest villain in the valley. One evening, the wolf trotted up to Percy’s straw house. He knocked on the flimsy door with a flourish.

'Little pig, little pig, let me come in!' he bellowed in a deep, theatrical voice.

Percy woke up, trembling. 'No! Not by the hair on my chinny-chin-chin!'

The wolf threw his head back and laughed. 'Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!' He took a deep breath, puffed out his chest until his buttons nearly popped, and exhaled a mighty gust of wind. The straw house disintegrated instantly, turning into a cloud of yellow dust. Percy squealed and ran as fast as his little legs could carry him to Pip’s house of sticks.

The wolf followed, skipping with dramatic flair. He arrived at Pip’s wooden shack and knocked again. 'Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!'

'No!' cried Pip and Percy together. 'Not by the hairs on our chinny-chin-chins!'

'Oh, how predictable!' the wolf sneered. 'Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!' He drew in an even larger breath, his eyes bulging with effort. He blew a gale so strong that the sticks flew into the air like toothpicks. The two pigs scrambled away, terrified, and dashed toward Peter’s brick house.

Peter let them in and bolted the heavy oak door. 'Stay calm,' he said softly. 'You are safe here.'

Soon, the wolf arrived. He looked at the solid red bricks and felt a flicker of doubt, but he wouldn't let his audience—the trees and the moon—see him fail. He stood tall, took his most dramatic stance, and shouted, 'Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!'

'Not by the hairs on our chinny-chin-chins!' Peter answered firmly.

'Then I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house down!' The wolf inhaled until he was as round as a balloon. He blew with all his might. The windows rattled, but the walls didn't budge. He tried again, turning purple in the face. He huffed and puffed until he was dizzy, but the brick house stood as still as a mountain.

Frustrated and out of breath, the wolf looked up and saw the chimney. 'Aha! A back door!' he whispered. He climbed onto the roof, intending to slide down and surprise the pigs. But Peter was one step ahead. He had placed a large pot of water over the roaring fire.

As the wolf slid down the chimney, he landed—SPLASH!—straight into the hot water. 'YEE-OWCH!' he howled, springing back up the chimney like a toasted marshmallow. He ran far away into the forest, never to be seen again.

Percy and Pip looked at their brother with newfound respect. They realized that while playing was fun, it was Peter’s hard work that had saved them. The next day, they both set to work, helping Peter build two more sturdy brick houses right next to his. From then on, the three little pigs lived happily and safely, knowing that a strong foundation is the secret to a happy life.
