Once upon a time, at the very edge of a vast, whispering forest, lived two children named Hansel and Gretel. They lived in a tiny wooden cottage with their father, a kind-hearted woodcutter. Though they did not have much in the way of gold or toys, the siblings had something far more precious: an unbreakable bond. Hansel was clever and quick, while Gretel was observant and brave. Together, they felt they could face any shadow the world might cast.
One evening, the woodcutter looked sadly at his empty cupboards. He knew he had to travel deep into the heart of the forest to find the finest timber to sell at the market, but he worried about leaving his children behind. 'We will come with you, Father,' Hansel said, squeezing Gretel’s hand. 'We are a team.'
As they set off into the emerald depths of the woods, Hansel secretly carried a loaf of crusty bread in his pocket. Every few steps, he would pause to drop a tiny crumb onto the soft, mossy earth. 'Why are you stopping, Hansel?' Gretel whispered. 'I am making a trail,' he replied softly. 'Just in case the forest tries to hide the way home. As long as we have each other and our path, we are safe.'
However, the forest was full of hungry, chirping birds. While the children helped their father gather wood, the birds swooped down and pecked up every single crumb. When the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of violet and orange, the woodcutter realized they had wandered too far. In the dim light, Hansel looked for his trail, but the ground was bare. The breadcrumbs were gone.

'Do not be afraid, Gretel,' Hansel said, though his own heart beat like a trapped bird. 'We will find our way.' Gretel took a deep breath. 'I trust you, Hansel. And you can trust me. Look, there is a light flickering through the trees!'
They followed the golden glow until they reached a clearing that looked like it had been plucked from a dream. In the center stood a cottage unlike any they had ever seen. The walls were made of dark, spicy gingerbread; the roof was tiled with pink sugar frosting; and the windows were panes of clear, golden barley sugar. It was a house made entirely of candy.
Hungry and tired, the children couldn't help themselves. Hansel nibbled a piece of the wall, and Gretel tasted a shutter made of chocolate. Suddenly, the door creaked open. An old woman with a tall hat and a crooked cane stepped out. 'Oh, my sweet little guests,' she cackled, her eyes twinkling with a strange light. 'Come in, come in! I have pancakes with apples and nuts inside.'
But the woman was not as kind as she seemed. She was a forest witch who loved to trap travelers. The next morning, she locked Hansel in a small wooden cage in the garden and told Gretel she must cook and clean all day. 'I will fatten him up for a feast!' the witch declared.

Days passed. Hansel and Gretel were separated by bars, but they spoke in whispers every night. 'She cannot see very well,' Hansel whispered. 'Every morning she asks to feel my finger to see if I am plump enough. I will show her this old chicken bone instead.'
For a week, the witch felt the thin, hard bone and grumbled, 'Still so skinny! How can this be?' But eventually, her patience ran out. 'Gretel!' she shouted. 'Light the oven! Skinny or not, today is the day.'
Gretel’s heart hammered against her ribs, but she remembered what Hansel had told her: they were a team. She saw the witch standing by the heavy iron door of the oven. 'I... I don't know how to check if the heat is right,' Gretel said, pretending to be confused. 'Could you show me?'
The witch huffed. 'Silly girl! You just lean in like this!' As the witch bent over to look into the glowing amber warmth of the oven, Gretel gathered all her courage. With a mighty shove, she pushed the witch inside and slammed the heavy door shut.
Gretel ran to the garden and unlocked Hansel’s cage. 'You did it, Gretel! You were so brave!' Hansel cried as they hugged tightly. Before leaving the candy house, they found a chest filled with sparkling pearls and golden coins. They filled their pockets, not for greed, but to ensure their father would never have to worry again.
With Gretel’s keen eyes leading the way and Hansel’s steady hand guiding her through the thickets, they found the path back to their father’s cottage. When the woodcutter saw them emerging from the trees, he wept with joy. They shared their treasure, but more importantly, they shared the story of how they had survived. They learned that while the world can be a dark and confusing forest, siblings who trust one another and work together can find their way through any shadow and turn any bitter moment into something sweet.
