One quiet night in the forest, little fox named Flicker snuggled into her leafy bed and listened to the soft rustle of the wind through the trees. Her mother had just begun to read her a story about a brave rabbit who found a hidden garden, and Flicker’s eyes were wide with wonder. As the story ended, Flicker turned to her mother and asked, “Who reads the bedtime stories when we’re all asleep?”
Her mother smiled and said, “The moon reads the stories to the whole forest, dear. That’s how bedtime stories are read.” Flicker tilted her head, curious. “Really? Can I see it?”
The next night, Flicker tiptoed out of her den and climbed to the highest hill in the forest. She waited until the moon rose high in the sky, glowing like a silver lantern. As she watched, she saw the moon shimmer and change shape. Suddenly, the moon began to glow in a way that looked like it was moving its lips. Flicker leaned closer, trying to hear the words. Then, she heard a voice—soft, gentle, and full of magic. It was reading a story about a sleepy bear who dreamed of flying.
Flicker’s heart fluttered. “I want to read stories too,” she whispered. “Maybe I can help the moon!” The next night, she brought a small book she had made from leaves and feathers, filled with her favorite tales. She climbed the hill again and waited until the moon appeared. She read aloud, her voice trembling at first but growing stronger with every word. The moon listened, and when she finished, it glowed brighter than ever before.
From that night on, Flicker would read stories to the moon, and the moon would read stories back to her. Soon, other animals heard about it and came to join. A wise old owl brought a tale about the stars, a curious squirrel read about the seasons, and even a shy hedgehog told a story about the quietest whisper in the woods. The moon would read them all, and the forest would fall asleep to the sound of stories.
One evening, as Flicker curled up in her den with her siblings, she realized something important. The magic wasn’t in the moon, or in the stories themselves. It was in the sharing, in the love of telling and listening. She smiled, thinking of how bedtime stories are read—not just by the moon, but by every heart that wants to share a tale.
And so, every night, the forest fell asleep to the gentle sound of stories, read by the moon and by the hearts of friends. The end.
The moral of the story is: Sharing stories brings hearts together and makes the world feel warm and safe.
