Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Once upon a time, in a kingdom where the mountains touched the clouds and the rivers sang to the stones, lived a princess named Snow White. She had hair as black as ebony, skin as white as snow, and lips as red as a winter rose. But her most beautiful feature wasn't something you could see in a mirror; it was the warmth of her heart. She spent her days helping the palace gardeners and singing to the bluebirds that nested in the castle eaves.

Snow White’s stepmother, the Queen, was very proud and very vain. She owned a Magic Mirror that could never tell a lie. Every morning, she would stand before it and ask, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" For many years, the mirror replied, "You are, O Queen, the fairest in the land." But as Snow White grew, her inner kindness began to shine through her eyes, making her more radiant every day. One morning, the mirror gave a different answer: "Snow White is the fairest of all."

The Queen was filled with a cold, sharp envy. She did not understand that true beauty isn't about the shape of a nose or the color of one's hair. Fearing the Queen’s growing anger, a kind woodsman told Snow White she must run away. With a heavy heart, Snow White fled deep into the Great Forest. The trees seemed tall and frightening at first, but the animals of the woods—the squirrels, the deer, and the rabbits—sensed her gentle spirit and guided her through the shadows.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold, Snow White stumbled upon a tiny cottage nestled between three ancient, mossy oaks. The door was small, the windows were small, and inside, everything was perfectly miniature. There were seven little chairs around a long wooden table and seven little beds lined up in a row like a train. Exhausted, Snow White cleaned the dusty cottage—partly to be helpful and partly to keep her mind off her fear. Then, she fell fast asleep across the tiny beds.

When the moon rose high, the owners of the cottage returned. They were seven dwarfs who worked in the sparkling jewel mines deep beneath the earth. There was Doc, the wise leader; Grumpy, who pretended to be cross but had a soft heart; Happy, who always hummed a merry tune; Sleepy, who could nap standing up; Bashful, who hid behind his long white beard; Sneezy, who kept the dust flying with his 'achoos'; and Dopey, who never said a word but had the widest, most joyful smile.

"Someone is in our house!" squeaked Sneezy, stopping a sneeze just in time.

"And they've scrubbed the porridge pot!" exclaimed Doc, looking at the gleaming kitchen.

They found Snow White sleeping peacefully. When she woke up, she told them her story. The dwarfs, who were usually very shy of strangers, felt the warmth radiating from her. "You may stay with us," said Doc. "We have plenty of room, and we could use a friend who knows where the broom is kept!"

Days turned into weeks, and the cottage became a place of great joy. Snow White learned that the dwarfs weren't just miners; they were artists of the earth. They showed her how they found beauty in rough, dusty stones by polishing them with patience and care. "It’s like people, Snow White," Happy said one evening as they sat by the crackling fire. "A stone might look plain on the outside, but if it has a good heart, it shines like a diamond once you get to know it."

Snow White realized that back at the palace, the Queen was obsessed with the outside "polishing," but she had forgotten to care for the "stone" inside. Snow White spent her days baking blackberry pies, singing with the birds, and teaching the dwarfs how to dance the polka. She found that her happiness didn't come from being a princess in a cold stone castle, but from being a friend in a warm wooden home.

One afternoon, while the dwarfs were away at the mines, a mysterious old woman appeared at the window. She offered Snow White a beautiful, red apple. "A gift for the fairest," the woman hissed with a toothless grin. Snow White, always wanting to be polite, reached for the fruit. But before she could take a bite, the birds of the forest began to flutter wildly, chirping a frantic warning. Bashful and Grumpy, who had forgotten their lunch pails, came running up the path just in time.

"Stop!" shouted Grumpy, waving his pickaxe. The old woman, who was really the Queen in a magical disguise, dropped the apple and fled back into the shadows of the forest, realizing she could never defeat the bond of true friendship. She realized that no matter how many spells she cast, she could never steal the light that Snow White carried within her.

The dwarfs gathered around Snow White, hugging her tight. "She tried to trick you because she is jealous of your light," Doc explained gently. "But your light comes from your kindness," added Bashful, blushing redder than his hat. "And that is a magic no mirror can ever break."

Snow White looked at her seven friends—each different, each special, and each beautiful in their own way. She realized she didn't need a crown to be a princess. She was the "fairest" because she filled the world around her with love. From that day on, the cottage in the woods was filled with laughter and the smell of fresh bread. Snow White and the seven dwarfs lived together in perfect harmony, teaching everyone who passed through the forest that while faces may change and mirrors may crack, a kind heart stays beautiful forever.
